This compelling novel traces the immigrant experience of sisters Pearl and Frieda Kahn who flee Russia in the early 20th century with the hope of landing in America But they are turned away at Ellis Island and find their way to Cuba where they struggle to adjust to a new culture, new acquaintances, and new plans to finally get to the United States. The characters are fully human, the plot is both tense and tender, and the writing is delicious.
