As part of our new “Local Talent” series, playwright Michael Hollinger came to visit Open Book Bookstore to chat with us about his creative process. This smart, dynamic playwright had two plays opening in Philadelphia this season alone. He’s prolific and his plays are always intriguing and enjoyable. He talked to us about his career path, including his original intention to enter a conservatory and study as a professional violist, but then how instead he moved into the world of theatre.

Michael Hollinger displays the many drafts of one of his plays.

He shared his writing process, and how he produces draft after draft of each play. Here he is pictured with a pile of 20+ drafts of his most recent play which he dragged along in a big plastic box to show the audience! His revision process includes watching performaces of the plays, and even then, still going back to the drawing board to do some tweaking.

My favorite quote about his work process: “I write and revise as if perfection were possible.”

Inpsiring words for all creatives!
